redRail’s- “RAC Protect”, a new paid add-on feature guarantees either a confirmed berth or a 50% fare refund as a travel voucher, a first in India’s rail ticketing landscape

redRail, the rail ticketing platform from redBus and an authorised IRCTC partner, has introduced “RAC Protect”, a first-of-its-kind that is a paid add-on designed to tackle one of Indian rail travel’s most persistent pain points: the uncertainty of RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) bookings.
Built on a “Confirm or Save 50%” assurance, RAC Protect guarantees that passengers who book a RAC ticket through redRail will either receive a fully confirmed berth upon chart preparation, or get 50% of the ticket fare returned as a travel voucher.
Under the existing system, RAC passengers pay the same full fare as confirmed ticket holders, despite being assigned a shared side-lower berth- a long-standing disparity that has drawn consistent criticism from travellers. Moreover, RAC tickets often remain the only available option on high-demand routes. Therefore, RAC Protect emerges as a simple and most effective solution.
RAC Protect directly addresses this gap. If the ticket gets confirmed, the traveller receives a full berth with no change at all. However, If it remains RAC after chart preparation, the 50% fare voucher is automatically issued, offering meaningful compensation for the reduced travel experience. This voucher can further be utilized on redRail or redBus (as per the applicable terms).
The feature is especially relevant for long-distance and overnight travellers, women, and elderly passengers who prioritise comfort and certainty while planning their journeys.
