Railway Minister, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw has flagged off a bulk tiles train at Western Carriers India Limited’s Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal in Morbi, Gujarat, marking the facility’s full commercial activation.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw formally flagged off a bulk tiles train at Western Carriers India Limited’s Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal at Devaliya in Morbi, Gujarat, marking the terminal’s transition from operational readiness to full commercial activation. Spanning over 42 acres, the terminal is designed as a multimodal logistics platform capable of handling cargo movement via both road and rail using Container Rake and Wagon Rake systems. The terminal is strategically positioned to serve Gujarat’s key industrial clusters, including the salt industry of the Maliya belt and the ceramics industry of Morbi, which produces around 5 million tonnes of ceramic products annually and caters to more than 80 per cent of India’s domestic ceramic demand. The facility is also expected to support the logistics needs of the chemicals, agriculture, fertiliser and MSME sectors in the region.
The Morbi terminal activation follows WCIL’s inauguration of its General Cargo Terminal at the GCD Yard of the Kolkata Dock System under the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority, the company’s first operational base on India’s east coast, developed under a 15-year agreement with the port authority. Together, the Kolkata and Morbi terminals strengthen WCIL’s rail-linked presence across the country’s East-West freight corridor. Rajendra Sethia, Chairman and Managing Director of Western Carriers India Limited, said the Morbi facility would serve as a vital logistics backbone for the salt industry, ceramics industry and other key sectors in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, reflecting the company’s commitment to building integrated and scalable logistics solutions in support of the Viksit Bharat vision. WCIL plans to further develop the facility’s capabilities, including an inland container depot and warehousing infrastructure.
