India is on the path to becoming the world’s second-largest metro network system, according to Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri. Speaking at the launch of an updated e-booklet titled “Transforming Urban Landscape,” Minister Puri shared key achievements in strengthening urban transport.
Currently, 872 kilometers of metro lines operate in 20 cities, with an average daily ridership of 85 lakhs. Additionally, around 988 kilometers of metro rail projects, including the Delhi-Meerut RRTS, are under construction in various cities across the country.
Minister Puri emphasised the significant rise in investments in the urban sector, from Rs 1,78,053 crore (2004-2014) to Rs 18,07,101 crore (2014 onwards), under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In line with the Prime Minister’s vision, the government sees urbanisation as an opportunity to create world-class cities, focusing on “Ease of Living.” The urban sector, previously neglected, has witnessed remarkable progress in the last nine years, and the government is utilising the latest technologies for urban development, including housing construction using 54 identified new technologies.
