The United States announced on 2 July 2026 that it will not renew the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement in its current form, one day before the deal was due for its first joint mandatory review.

US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer said the US will continue bilateral engagement with Mexico and Canada to address the agreement’s shortcomings and trade deficits, but the trilateral deal will not be renewed as it stands. The decision triggers a six-year sunset clause review, meaning the agreement will remain in force until 2036 unless terminated earlier. US goods trade deficits with Mexico and Canada reached $197 billion and $48.3 billion respectively in 2025. The US will meet Mexico in bilateral negotiations during the week of 20 July. Canada and Mexico both signalled willingness to continue talks to resolve outstanding issues.
