A consignment of blast furnace slag and TMT bars completes the Kolkata to Guwahati journey via inland waterways, underscoring the route’s growing role in bulk cargo logistics

A high-value consignment shipped by Tata Steel Ltd., Kolkata, for Larsen and Toubro Ltd., Guwahati, has successfully reached Pandu in Guwahati via the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route, using India’s inland waterway network.
The cargo comprised 23,980 bags of granulated blast furnace slag weighing approximately 1,199 MT, along with 300 MT of TMT bars, totalling around 1,500 MT. The consignment was transported via Tug MV Trishul along with barges DB Dikhu and DB Ajay. The Inland Waterways Authority of India played a key role in enabling the seamless movement.
The successful operation highlights the growing efficiency and commercial viability of inland waterways for bulk cargo movement, and the route’s potential to improve logistics efficiency and regional connectivity between eastern India and the northeast.
