The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has introduced a suite of infrastructure and digital projects worth ₹235 crore at Chennai Port Authority and Kamarajar Port. This initiative is designed to bolster maritime capacity and advance the national goal of port-led economic growth.
Speaking at the “Viksit Bharat, Viksit Ports” event, Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted that these investments focus on creating climate-resilient, technologically advanced hubs. He noted that the updates would streamline trade and improve the ease of doing business, ensuring Indian ports remain globally competitive.
Of the total funding, ₹129.36 crore is dedicated to Chennai Port Authority. Major works include:
- Coastal protection: A ₹33.28 crore project to reinforce 850 metres of coastal revetment with climate-proof designs.
- Safety infrastructure: A new ₹43 crore firefighting pump house at the Oil Dock to protect energy assets.
- Health services: An ₹8.08 crore modernisation of the port hospital to upgrade surgical and diagnostic facilities.
At Kamarajar Port, a ₹105 crore rehabilitation of the Northern Breakwater Head was inaugurated. This structure, previously damaged by cyclones, has been strengthened with over 3,000 tetrapods to ensure safer vessel navigation.
Sarbananda Sonowal also launched the Enterprise Business System, a ₹45 crore digital platform that integrates finance, assets, and operations into a single transparent system. Furthermore, a new national e-port clearance portal was unveiled on 8th January 2026, allowing shipping agents to apply for and download certificates online to reduce port turnaround times.
Beyond infrastructure, the Minister flagged off the India International Regatta 2026 and provided ₹18 lakh to the Royal Madras Yacht Club for student training. On 8th January 2026, Sarbananda Sonowal also visited the Swabodhini School and Vocational Centre for Special Children to review inclusive education and therapy programs.
