India marks a major maritime shift as Sarbananda Sonowal flags off the nation’s first all-electric green tug, part of the GTTP initiative.

An important turning point in India’s transition to sustainable and energy-efficient marine operations was reached on December 3, 2025, as Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) Sarbananda Sonowal virtually flagged off the nation’s first all-electric green tug.
The green tugboat, intended for Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, is being created under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), a flagship initiative aimed at speeding India’s maritime decarbonisation efforts.
Speaking at the event, Sonowal stated that the introduction of the country’s first all-electric green tug underlines India’s strong commitment to clean energy integration in the maritime sector.
Sonowal asserted that this achievement solidifies India’s commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable maritime sector.
With a 60-ton bollard pull capacity, the new green tug for DPA will guarantee silent operations, zero carbon emissions, and maximum energy efficiency.
According to an official release, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways initiated the GTTP with the goal of inducting 50 green tugs by 2030, with 16 to be deployed in the first phase between 2024 and 2027.
