PM Modi highlights India’s growing cargo capacity and future plans at IATA’s 81st AGM and World Air Transport Summit.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi emphasised India’s rising role in global air cargo, addressing the 81st Annual General Meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the World Air Transport Summit held in New Delhi. Highlighting the sector’s exponential growth, he stated that India currently transports 3.5 million metric tons of cargo annually and aims to increase this volume to 10 million metric tons by 2030.
He noted that the expanding cargo ecosystem is supported by strategic policies and infrastructure investments. India’s airport network has grown from 74 operational airports in 2014 to 162 today. Additionally, Indian carriers have placed orders for over 2,000 new aircraft, further boosting cargo handling capabilities.
The Prime Minister also spotlighted Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) as a critical growth sector, with 154 MRO units now operational compared to 96 in 2014. India targets building a $4 billion MRO hub by 2030, backed by 100% FDI, tax reforms, and industry-friendly initiatives. He reiterated that India is evolving into a full-spectrum value-chain leader in global aviation logistics.
