The V O Chidambaranar (VOC) Port, located in Tamil Nadu, has created history by becoming the first port in India to manage green ammonia. Operated by the V O Chidambaranar Port Authority, a state-owned entity, this port in Thoothukudi received three 20-inch tank containers filled with environmentally friendly fuel from the Port of Damietta in Egypt. The consignment was intended for Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilisers.
VOC Port officials have expressed their satisfaction with this achievement, emphasising their commitment to adopting eco-friendly alternatives in energy and transportation. The port is actively promoting sustainable practices and plays a pivotal role in trade and commerce in the region.
This import of green ammonia at VOC Port signifies a significant step toward reducing the carbon footprint of shipping and transportation in the area. It aligns with the global trend toward sustainable energy sources and supports India’s efforts to decrease greenhouse gas emissions as part of its climate action commitments.
VOC Port is embarking on a project to establish a green hydrogen ecosystem for industries, positioning itself as India’s hub for exporting and bunkering green hydrogen.
Alongside Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, VOC Port has been designated by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways as one of the two major ports in the country to house green hydrogen and green ammonia plants.
