Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, lauded the international deep-water multipurpose seaport, Vizhinjam, as a transformative asset for the state’s infrastructure and development. He revealed plans for the port to handle one million containers each year, surpassing even Singapore.
With container transshipment capabilities and strategic proximity to major shipping routes, Vizhinjam Port is set to revolutionise Kerala’s infrastructure and development. CM Vijayan’s social media post also underscored the potential for attracting investments and generating numerous job opportunities.
The announcement coincided with the arrival of ‘Zhen Hua 15,’ the inaugural vessel that docked at Vizhinjam port on October 15. This vessel, originating from China and carrying cranes, received a water salute as it entered the Rs 7,700 crore deepwater international port.
The vessel’s journey had been delayed due to adverse weather conditions en route from China. Notably, the Vizhinjam Port project previously faced opposition from local fishermen and environmental concerns.
