SkyTeam Cargo launches an EASA-approved paper-based pallet, cutting costs and emissions while reducing aircraft weight by 10–15 kg.
Air cargo alliance SkyTeam Cargo has introduced a new paper-based cargo pallet designed to help reduce costs and environmental impact. Developed by TRIP&CO and approved by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), these pallets offer a sustainable alternative to traditional wood and plastic pallets.
Weighing 10–15 kg less than conventional pallets, the new paper-based pallets are made from 94 percent recycled fibres, are humidity-resistant, and comply with ISPM 15 standards, a key industry requirement. The lightweight design helps reduce aircraft weight, leading to cost savings and lower emissions.
Unlike Euro pallets, the new carton pallets can be reused multiple times, depending on handling and usage, which reduces wood consumption, waste, and emissions. SkyTeam Cargo successfully trialled the pallets last year with members Air France Cargo and KLM Cargo during SkyTeam’s annual flight challenge, aimed at finding innovative ways to reduce aviation’s environmental footprint.
John Engelaan, Vice President at SkyTeam Cargo, highlighted the benefits, stating, “The latest version of our carton pallet not only cuts costs but also has the potential to significantly cut emissions—something the air cargo industry is striving towards. Substituting one-way Euro pallets for SkyTeam’s multiple-use carton pallets could reduce the industry’s wood consumption, weight, and emissions.”
