Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (Kolkata Port) achieves a profit jump to Rs 501.73 crore in FY’24, along with a record cargo handling of 66.4 million tonnes.
In a significant achievement, Kolkata Port, also referred to as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, has reported a substantial 65% surge in profit for the fiscal year 2023–24, reaching an impressive figure of Rs 501.73 crore. This remarkable increase marks a substantial jump from the previous fiscal year’s net surplus of Rs 304.07 crore. Alongside this financial success, the port has also set a new record in cargo handling, handling a total of 66.4 million tonnes during the same period, marking an all-time high for the port.
Despite facing challenges such as trade disruptions in sea freight due to geopolitical reasons, the port managed to achieve a combined growth rate of 1.11%. This growth encompasses both the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), which collectively contribute to the port’s operations.
Attributing the rise in cargo handling amidst disruptions to a series of strategic initiatives, Chairman Rathendra Raman emphasised efforts to enhance productivity, safety measures, business development, and overall capacity utilization. Particularly, the significant contribution of HDC, which handled 49.54 million tonnes, played a pivotal role in this achievement. Meanwhile, KDS logged 16.856 million tonnes of cargo in the fiscal year 2023–24, compared to 17.052 million tonnes in the preceding year.
