India exports its first-ever consignment of pomegranates to Australia, boosting trade ties.
India achieved a significant milestone in its perishable exports by shipping pomegranates to Australia for the first time. On August 31, 2024, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the shipment of 1.1 metric tonnes of pomegranates from Mumbai to Melbourne. The consignment, consisting of 336 boxes, underwent irradiation treatment at a facility in Navi Mumbai.
Mumbai-based exporter Kay Bee Exports handled the shipment using Air India’s direct flight to Melbourne. The company, which ships two to three consignments of pomegranates weekly, has exported five tonnes of the ‘Bhagwa’ variety to Australia.
While market access for Indian pomegranates was granted in 2020, it was only in February 2024 that the export protocol and irradiation process were finalised, streamlining exports to Australia. APEDA continues to support the industry through Export Promotion Forums, boosting India’s global presence and creating opportunities for farmers.
