India addresses US tariffs on steel and aluminium, enhancing trade ties and safeguarding domestic manufacturers.

The United States has announced a 25% tariff on steel and aluminium imports, effective from March 12, 2025, on a Most Favoured Nation (MFN) basis. In response, India is actively engaging with the US to strengthen bilateral trade relations.
India’s steel sector, though deregulated, benefits from government support through various measures. The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) oversees anti-dumping investigations to protect domestic industries from unfair trade practices. Currently, Anti-Dumping Duty (ADD) measures are in place on steel imports from countries like China, Korea, and Vietnam.
Additionally, India has implemented policies like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for specialty steel and the Domestically Manufactured Iron & Steel Products (DMI&SP) Policy to promote local production. Recent budgetary measures, such as duty exemptions on raw materials, aim to boost competitiveness. The government continues to safeguard domestic manufacturers while enhancing India’s global trade stance.
