IFCBA members convene at WCO headquarters to discuss key trade and customs issues.
Members of the International Federation of Customs Brokers Associations (IFCBA) from 12 countries gathered at the World Customs Organization (WCO) headquarters on June 3-4, highlighting the collaborative spirit and shared goals of both entities. With 40 delegates in attendance, the meeting emphasised the year’s theme, “Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners With Purpose.”
WCO Secretary General Ian Saunders welcomed the representatives, commending the IFCBA for its valuable insights on topics such as the Harmonized System of Tariff Classification, Rules of Origin developments, e-commerce challenges, Green Customs initiatives, and Business Resilience strategies. Delegates engaged in productive discussions with WCO experts on these critical issues.
The IFCBA’s role in the WCO Private Sector Consultative Group (PSCG) was underscored by PSCG Chair Jaime King from Mexico, who presented ongoing work and initiatives. Education was a major focus, with discussions on enhancing the knowledge base of IFCBA members and exploring global certification opportunities, including potential collaborations with the WCO Academy.
IFCBA Chairman Shankar Shinde from India expressed gratitude for the efforts of both organisations, emphasising the importance of customs brokers in securing borders and facilitating legal trade. He highlighted the collaboration with the WCO as crucial for fostering a transparent and trust-based trade environment.
The meeting featured presentations from key WCO figures, including Gael Grooby, Acting Director of Tariff and Trade Directorate, Brendan O’Hearn, Deputy Director of Facilitation, and Susanne Schwarz, E-learning Coordinator of the Capacity Building Directorate.
As the event concluded, delegates expressed enthusiasm for the IFCBA 2025 Kyoto World Conference, scheduled for March 25-28, 2025, and hosted by the Japan Customs Brokers Association (JCBA). This upcoming event promises to be a valuable opportunity for networking and professional development in the customs brokerage community.
