In a significant move, member countries of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have united to target a 5 percent reduction in aviation CO2 emissions compared to current fossil fuel levels by 2030.
This commitment, established at the Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF), encompasses a collective vision for a green energy transition, standardised regulatory foundations, support for implementation initiatives, and enhanced financing access to ensure global inclusivity.
The reduction goal will be achieved by transitioning to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), lower carbon aviation fuels (LCAF), and other cleaner energies.
This commitment aligns with ICAO’s overarching objective of achieving Net-Zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050, as set forth by the ICAO Assembly in 2022. Despite challenges in sustainable aviation fuel production, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) sees the agreement as a positive signal for increased SAF adoption, urging governments to invest in supportive schemes and policies.
