Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal officially launched the roadshow for the Global Maritime India Summit 2023 (GMIS). The event aimed to showcase the significant progress made in India’s maritime sector. Minister Sonowal emphasised the transformative role of inland waterways, especially under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
He highlighted that the government has marked a remarkable 200 percent increase in inland waterways investment since 2014, compared to the past 28 years. The development of inland waterways is seen as a key driver for the economic growth of India’s hinterland.
Port-led development was another focus, with the government striving to elevate Indian ports to global standards, fostering industrialisation and manufacturing.
The roadshow featured dignitaries, including officials from neighboring countries Bhutan and Bangladesh, and is part of the build-up to GMIS 2023 scheduled for October 17-19 in Delhi.
