Global logistics giant DP World enters the air cargo industry, inaugurating an air cargo logistics hub at Punta Cana Airport, Dominican Republic. Morten Johansen, COO of DP World Americas, highlights its suitability for both belly cargo and freighter shipments.
The multimodal facility, developed in partnership with Grupo Puntacana, includes a logistics center, warehouse, manufacturing facilities, fuel supply terminal, and maintenance workshop. Focused on diversification, the hub handles perishables, machinery, automotive equipment, and seafood.
Johansen emphasises plans for partnerships with airlines, freight forwarders, and ground handlers. The move aligns with DP World’s shift from port operator to a global logistics provider with end-to-end supply chain ambitions.
The hub aims to enhance connectivity in the Dominican Republic and become an alternative transit point for cargo from South America to the US, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East. Official inauguration is scheduled for Q1 2024.
