India has unveiled a 40-country outreach strategy to strengthen textile exports amid US tariff hikes.

In response to US President Donald Trump’s 50% tariff on Indian goods, India has announced a major outreach initiative in 40 key global markets to expand textile exports. The programme targets countries such as the UK, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, and the UAE, among others, which collectively import over $590 billion worth of textiles annually.
According to officials, the move aims to position India as a dependable supplier of sustainable and innovative textile products. Export Promotion Councils (EPCs), along with Indian missions abroad, will spearhead efforts, including market mapping, trade fair participation, and sector-specific campaigns under a unified Brand India banner.
The strategy also includes guidance for exporters on tapping free trade agreements, meeting global sustainability benchmarks, and securing certifications to enhance competitiveness. Clusters such as Surat, Panipat, Tirupur, and Bhadohi will be linked directly with emerging opportunities in these markets.
Officials downplayed fears over Trump’s tariff impact, emphasising India’s diversified export base and resilience, noting that only select sectors may face short-term challenges.
