At the 15th BRICS Trade Meet, India pushes for free trade, WTO reforms, and inclusive digital transformation.

In a bold call for trade liberalisation and inclusive global governance, India urged BRICS members to dismantle export controls during the 15th BRICS Trade Ministers’ Meeting held on 21st May 2025 under Brazil’s presidency. Themed “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” the summit focused on fostering deeper trade and technological ties among emerging economies.
Representing India, Yashvir Singh, economic adviser in the Department of Commerce, delivered a strong message opposing restrictive trade measures that disrupt critical supply chains. India also highlighted its demand for a permanent solution on Public Stockholding (PSH) for food security at the WTO and reiterated its “30 for 30” reform proposal to mark WTO’s 30th anniversary with 30 pragmatic improvements.
India appreciated Brazil’s consensus-driven leadership and welcomed Indonesia’s induction as a new BRICS member in 2025. As the next BRICS President in 2026, India called for a decentralised and inclusive global trade architecture that aligns with the developmental needs of the Global South.
A key outcome of the meeting was the endorsement of the BRICS Joint Declaration, along with three annexures:
- BRICS Declaration on WTO Reform and Multilateral Trading System
- BRICS Data Economy Governance Understanding
- BRICS Trade and Sustainable Development Framework
The Declaration cautioned against unilateral climate-related trade measures being misused as disguised restrictions and emphasised equitable, rule-based trade practices.
India also championed Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and Mission LiFE, advocating sustainable lifestyles and circular economy principles. It reaffirmed leadership in tech-driven growth through initiatives like Digital India, IndiaAI, and participation in global platforms like GPAI and G20, underlining digital equity as central to global cooperation.
The meeting reaffirmed BRICS’ united commitment to sustainable development, fair trade, and inclusive digital transformation.
