Mormugao Port halts west breakwater ops from May 20; strict monsoon protocols for vessel safety enforced.

The Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) has issued a comprehensive advisory for the monsoon season, suspending all operations west of the breakwater from May 20 until further notice. The move is aimed at ensuring maritime safety during the adverse weather conditions typical of the monsoon period.
The advisory prohibits small craft and barges from entering the affected area, urging them to remain in sheltered waters. The port will also implement a series of additional safety measures for moored vessels.
Key measures include:
- Ships must be moored with at least six head ropes and six stern ropes made of floating synthetic material like polypropylene.
- Anchors may be used depending on the vessel size and prevailing weather.
- During bad weather, vessels may be shifted to suitable berths or outer anchorage if berths are unavailable.
- Anchorages east of the breakwater will depend on real-time space availability.
The allotment of mooring dolphins will be based on:
- Vessel arrival/loading timelines
- Type and rate of cargo handling
- Onboard gear for loading/discharging
The port also clarified that turning basin access will be restricted, only allowed for emergency cases or vessels from Yellow Fever areas lacking radio pratique.
Night navigation will continue for vessels up to 235 metres LOA, subject to weather conditions. Pilots have been instructed to ensure extra mooring lines, while vessel masters must keep engines, winches, and crew on standby at all times.
All vessels at anchorage must pay out adequate anchor chain, maintain strict navigation watches, and monitor weather reports closely.
Storm warnings and alerts will be issued via Port Signal Station and transmitted to all stakeholders, port users, and authorities, MPA confirmed in a communiqué.
The advisory underscores MPA’s focus on maritime safety during the high-risk monsoon season.
