India boosts cargo-handling capacity with ₹545 crore projects, aiming for global maritime leadership by 2047.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal laid the cornerstone for major infrastructure projects worth ₹545 crore at Kamarajar Port in Chennai, signalling India’s ambitious drive to expand its cargo-handling capabilities and solidify its position in the global maritime industry.
Speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of Kamarajar Port Trust, Sonowal emphasised India’s goal to rank among the top 10 maritime nations by 2047. He credited the port’s efficient coal-handling operations and its pivotal role in decongesting Chennai Port as significant milestones.
The projects include a capital dredging initiative and an integrated command and control centre to enhance operational efficiency. Additionally, the construction of a 3 MTPA IOCL jetty is set to further boost the port’s cargo capacity.
In a bid to support both the port and the local community, the minister announced a ₹32 crore 1 MLD seawater desalination plant to address drinking water and domestic needs.
Sonowal highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to timely execution of infrastructure projects, ensuring quality and efficiency in flagship programs aimed at transforming India’s maritime ecosystem.
With these developments, Kamarajar Port continues to play a critical role in India’s strategy to enhance port capacity, strengthen its maritime infrastructure, and position itself as a global leader in the shipping industry.
