India’s first semi-automated container port, Vizhinjam, showcases its capabilities as MV San Fernando docks with 2000 containers.
MV San Fernando, the first mothership to carry 2000 containers, arrived at Vizhinjam International Seaport (VIST) in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday morning. The 300-meter long, 48-meter-wide ship received a water salute from tug boats upon its arrival at 7:15 a.m. and completed berthing by 9:50 a.m. Enthusiastic crowds gathered to celebrate the event, waving national flags and playing drums.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan hailed the arrival as a dream come true in a Facebook post. The vessel embarked on its journey from Xiamen, China, on July 2 and reached VIST after an eight-day voyage. The crew consists of 22 members, including five Indians, one of whom is Prajeesh from Palakkad. The crew will undergo medical clearance before disembarking.
Vizhinjam Port, India’s first semi-automated container port, will showcase its capabilities by unloading the containers. The port is equipped with eight ship-to-shore cranes, the largest in the country, and 23-yard cranes. These cranes will facilitate the handling of 400 containers on board. One of two feeder ships is expected to arrive on July 13 to assist with cargo transhipment.
These trials are essential for confirming the port’s readiness to meet global standards in dwell times, vessel turnaround, and berth productivity. Conducting real container handling during these tests will ensure efficient operations ahead of the port’s anticipated commissioning between September and October.
Extensive celebrations are planned for this significant event. The Chief Minister will personally welcome the ship on July 12 at 10 a.m., with Port Minister VN Vasavan presiding over the ceremony. Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will be the Chief Guest, accompanied by Karan Adani, CEO of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), Shashi Tharoor MP, and other state dignitaries.
