Kathrin Reuter, Managing Director, Embassy Freight Services Europe (Germany), observes that for medium-sized freight forwarders specialising in worldwide air and sea freight, AI offers significant benefits when technology complements rather than replaces personalised service.

Smart technology amplifies, rather than replaces, personal attention.
It is particularly valuable in shipment tracking, route and capacity planning, demand forecasting and document processing. Automating data entry, quotations and document checks reduces errors and saves time, while AI can also identify potential delays, enabling proactive responses and better customer communication. The gain is more time for individual customer needs instead of mass processing.
Predictive Logistics on the Horizon
Looking ahead three to five years, AI will increasingly support predictive logistics, provide earlier warnings of disruption and optimise routes, costs and capacity. Automated workflows and better data integration will improve communication between carriers, suppliers and customers, and AI assistants may accelerate quotations and improve access to customer information. Progress, however, will depend on reliable data combined with experienced logistics professionals.
Cargo That Demands a Human Mind
Human expertise is particularly essential for shipments involving dangerous goods, project cargo, out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo and heavy-lift, which require careful assessment of safety regulations, technical constraints and risks. AI can support planning, risk assessment and route selection, but experienced professionals must evaluate options, coordinate specialised partners and make final decisions. Building trust, managing difficult situations, negotiating and finding creative solutions require personal communication and practical expertise. For medium-sized freight forwarders, the goal is to use AI intelligently to improve efficiency without losing personal contact. Personal attention and smarter tools meet most visibly in networks that plan predictively across transport, express distribution and warehousing.
