Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB) aims to export 5,000 tonnes of mangoes this season, eyeing lucrative markets.
The Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB) is gearing up for a robust mango export season following a lean period in 2022-23. Sanjay Kadam, managing director of MSAMB, revealed plans to process and export 5,000 tonnes of mangoes this season, primarily targeting developed markets such as the US and Europe.
The mango season has commenced on an optimistic note, buoyed by favorable climatic conditions. Growers, particularly from the Konkan region, anticipate a fruitful harvest, considering reports of severe moisture stress affecting orchards in Karnataka, potentially leading to an early end to their season. Alphonso and Kesar mangoes from Maharashtra are highly sought-after export varieties.
MSAMB’s export facility in Vashi is equipped with Vapour Heat Treatment and irradiation facilities, essential for meeting the phytosanitary requirements of various importing countries.
Kadam noted that the US phytosanitary inspector is scheduled to visit on April 10, paving the way for full-fledged mango exports to the US market. The board is also eyeing markets in Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and European Union countries.
With mango cultivation spanning over 2.4 lakh hectares in India, this season is estimated to yield approximately 21.79 million tonnes of mangoes. In the fiscal year 2022-23, India exported 22,963.76 tonnes of mangoes, highlighting the significance of mango exports in bolstering agricultural trade.
