Steel Minister says resilient manufacturing and supply chains are central to India’s clean energy ambitions.
Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy has said that energy security is no longer defined only by access to energy resources but increasingly by a nation’s ability to manufacture, innovate and build resilient supply chains for clean energy technologies. Addressing the 7th CII International Energy Conference & Exhibition in New Delhi, the Minister said India is positioning itself as a global manufacturing hub for clean energy technologies under the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047.
The Minister said recent geopolitical developments, supply chain disruptions and growing competition for critical minerals have reshaped global industrial priorities, making manufacturing capability a key pillar of national economic security. He stressed that India should emerge not only as a major consumer but also as a leading producer of clean energy equipment, materials and technologies. Kumaraswamy highlighted the role of the steel and heavy industries sectors in supporting renewable energy infrastructure, batteries, electric mobility, power equipment and green hydrogen projects.
Highlighting the steel sector, Kumaraswamy said India aims to achieve 300 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity by 2030 while promoting sustainable production practices and accelerating the adoption of green steel technologies. He also outlined government initiatives to strengthen domestic manufacturing, including the ₹10,900 crore PM E-DRIVE Scheme, the ₹18,100 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell Batteries and the ₹7,280 crore Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets to reduce import dependence and strengthen critical supply chains.
Calling for stronger collaboration between government, industry, academia and research institutions, the Minister said resilient supply chains require a comprehensive manufacturing ecosystem that creates value and employment. He invited industry stakeholders to partner with the government in advancing India’s clean energy transition and achieving the vision of a self-reliant and developed nation by 2047.
