Indian Railways has approached the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and the Ministry of Power to secure nuclear energy for its operations. The initiative aims to cut reliance on fossil fuels and support its goal of becoming a net zero carbon emitter by 2030.
Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw stated in the Rajya Sabha that nuclear energy offers a stable and clean power source to meet increasing traction demands. The railway network, which has already electrified 45,200 route kilometers since 2014-15, is shifting toward renewable and alternative energy sources.
Currently, Indian Railways operates 487 MW of solar and 103 MW of wind power. With fuel costs among its top expenses, nuclear power integration is expected to improve energy security while reducing operational costs. The railway system is expanding rapidly, requiring a sustainable and efficient power supply for long-term growth.
