Government strengthens initiatives to reduce import reliance for EV batteries.
India is intensifying its efforts to reduce dependence on imported critical minerals essential for electric vehicle (EV) production. The National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), approved for 2024-31 with a budget of Rs 16,300 crore, aims to secure a sustainable supply of key materials like lithium and cobalt.
To boost domestic capacity, the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act was amended, enabling exclusive auctions for critical minerals. Additionally, 100% FDI has been allowed for mining and exploration, and customs duties on 25 minerals have been eliminated to encourage local production.
Overseas partnerships are also being pursued, with Khanij Bidesh India (KABIL) securing lithium mining agreements in Argentina. Alongside initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, these measures aim to build a robust EV battery supply chain and position India as a leader in green mobility.
