India’s festive demand environment, says Pankaj Kumar Patodi, Head, Supply Chain at Godfrey Phillips India Ltd., is highly dynamic, shaped by shifting choices around gifting and consumption.

Real-time sensing now matters more than forecast accuracy alone
Success is measured by how quickly an organisation senses these shifts and responds across manufacturing, procurement, logistics and distribution, with those combining data-driven planning and operational flexibility best placed to protect service and profitability.
Sensing demand beyond the forecast
The key, Patodi says, is sensing real demand beyond forecast accuracy alone, using real-time market signals, consumer surveys and AI alongside scenario planning. Organisations are now more willing to invest in flexible manufacturing and responsive sourcing rather than excess inventory buffers, while planning liquidation of unsold stock near the festival’s end remains equally important to avoiding inventory build-up.
Aligning manufacturing and procurement with the delivery promise
Transactions multiply during the festive season, yet delivery expectations stay unchanged, directly shaping production schedules, supplier commitments and procurement, with companies securing materials earlier and aligning production with channel-level demand visibility.
Orchestrating inventory across channels
Inventory allocation has moved toward dynamic orchestration, Patodi notes, with a single product needing simultaneous availability across channels. This calls for end-to-end visibility and analytics-driven decisions, with frequent review against actual consumption helping avoid both stockouts and disappointment.
Unifying planning for cold-chain exports
Integrating production, warehousing, transport and cold-chain operations into one planning process is critical for festive exports, with shelf-life constraints requiring a plan that accounts for transit and shelf time together. The consistent emphasis, Patodi says, is the right product, at the right time, to the right consumer.
