Kempegowda International Airport introduces AI-driven technology to manage ground and aircraft movements at critical intersections.

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has launched an integrated Smart Airside Safety System at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport), targeting safer and more efficient management of Cross Service Roads (CSRs), where aircraft and ground vehicle movements intersect. The system combines AI-based computer vision, intelligent automation and centralised control to manage right-of-way protection, replacing manual and semi-manual inset light activation that previously introduced operational risk and limited visibility.
AI-enabled cameras monitor CSR intersections in real time, identifying potential right-of-way conflicts, detecting non-compliant movements and confirming zone clearance before restoring normal signalling. Automated inset light activation protects aircraft right-of-way based on these detections, while a centralised analytics platform digitally logs all events to support governance and compliance. The system is designed to reduce human error particularly during night and low-visibility operations, improve traffic flow and minimise unnecessary stoppages. BIAL states the technology also establishes a scalable foundation for predictive safety analytics, enabling trend analysis, peak-hour optimisation and risk forecasting to support continuous airside improvement.
