Assam to serve as a gateway for 800m people, boosting regional growth via the Act East policy and inland waterways.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, speaking at the 2nd Guwahati Dialogue, stated that Assam is uniquely positioned to become a regional growth hub. Under the Act East Policy, the state is set to serve a market of 800 million people, extending from Nepal to Myanmar, by deepening logistical and economic integration with Southeast Asia.
Sonowal emphasised that pollution-free inland waterways are vital for environmental sustainability and transport efficiency, noting that these routes are essential for modern freight and cargo movement. He highlighted that the past 11 years have seen a transformation in regional connectivity, integrating previously isolated areas into the national supply chain.
The strategy focuses on expanding transport corridors to reduce costs and improve the ease of doing business. By leveraging its strategic geography and upgraded infrastructure, Assam aims to drive inclusive development and support the national goal of becoming a developed economy by 2047. Industry leaders and investors have been invited to participate in the state’s expanding logistics and connectivity network.
