India and Japan signed a series of agreements on 2 July 2026 at the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in New Delhi, boosting cooperation across artificial intelligence, critical metals, energy security and defence.

The agreements were concluded after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who was on a three-day visit to India. The two countries adopted a joint roadmap for economic security and signed the first formal pact on defence co-development of military hardware. A joint AI statement outlined frameworks for international governance, safety standards and bilateral research. Japan had previously pledged to more than double its investment in India to over $61 billion over the next decade. Takaichi described the relationship as mutually complementary and increasingly important amid a turbulent international landscape.
