An SMS-based door assignment system developed by the local team has brought average truck processing time down to 48 minutes at Italy’s biggest airfreight gateway.

Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) has significantly reduced truck processing times at its cargo terminal at Milan Malpensa Airport using an SMS-based warehouse door assignment system developed by its local cargo handling team. The airport handles approximately 65% of Italy’s annual airfreight volumes, with WFS processing around 28,000 trucks a year at the facility.
The improvement follows a strategic redesign of the warehouse frontage, including the addition of truck parking bays, and the deployment of the SMS solution to assign trucks to warehouse doors with clear and timely communications to drivers. Average truck service time now stands at 48 minutes, with 45% of all truck visits completed within 30 minutes and 75% within one hour. Only 10% of total operations exceed airport KPI thresholds during peak time.
WFS is also promoting its CargoKiosk technology to further digitalise truck and driver processing. In early 2026, WFS Milan Malpensa also introduced a Dock Coordination Position, with further investment planned to reorganise vehicle flow and establish a dedicated acceptance office at dock level in coordination with SEA, the Airport Authority. Luigi Pellino, Operations Director, said the innovation provides the opportunity to boost throughput and increase customer satisfaction.
