FedEx to build 300,000 sq ft automated hub at NMIA, boosting trade flows and creating 6,000+ jobs.

Major global express transportation company FedEx has announced an investment of over ₹2,500 crore to set up a 300,000 sq ft fully automated cargo hub at the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), marking one of its largest long-term infrastructure commitments in India.
The facility, being developed in collaboration with Adani Airport Holdings (AAHL), will function as a regional consolidation and redistribution hub, supporting trade flows across Southeast Asia, West Asia, Europe and the United States. The hub will embed FedEx’s global network connectivity directly into India’s primary western trade corridor.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held at the NMIA cargo terminal site in the presence of Devendra Fadnavis, along with senior leadership from FedEx and AAHL. FedEx President and CEO Raj Subramaniam described the investment as a strategic shift towards hub-led, transhipment-driven logistics in line with India’s evolving trade ambitions.
Equipped with advanced automated sorting systems, dimensional scanning, high-speed security screening, and dedicated freighter aircraft parking bays, the Navi Mumbai hub will enable simultaneous inbound and outbound processing, improving routing flexibility and transit time predictability. The facility will particularly benefit high-value and time-sensitive sectors such as electronics, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals and perishables.
FedEx, which handles around 17 million packages daily and operates 400 freighter flights per day globally, said the new hub will significantly strengthen capacity in India’s largest international trade corridor. Once operational, the facility is expected to generate over 6,000 direct and indirect jobs across logistics, warehousing, transportation and allied services. The company already operates a major technology hub in Hyderabad.
AAHL Director Jeet Adani said NMIA has earmarked 29 hectares for cargo infrastructure, including 10 dedicated freighter stands and a fully automated terminal with a future handling capacity of over 3 million metric tonnes of cargo annually. He highlighted NMIA’s proximity to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, industrial corridors and multimodal transport networks as a rare global advantage.
Calling the project a vote of confidence in India’s economic trajectory, Raj Subramaniam said the investment, equivalent to over USD 250 million, aligns with the National Logistics Policy and PM Gati Shakti Plan and reflects FedEx’s long-term commitment to India amid global supply chain diversification.
Addressing the event, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said FedEx’s decision underscores India’s growing importance in global trade and the role of advanced logistics and AI-driven technologies in reducing logistics costs and enhancing competitiveness. FedEx MEISA President Kami Vishwanathan added that the hub will improve reliability, speed and efficiency for customers, while strengthening EXIM capabilities for MSMEs through faster turnaround times and lower logistics costs.
Once fully operational, the Navi Mumbai cargo hub is expected to position NMIA as a world-class logistics gateway, placing India more firmly at the centre of global supply chains.
