India and Germany have signed a postal pact to boost e-commerce and launch premium express delivery services for MSMEs.

In a significant move to bolster bilateral ties within the postal, express, and logistics sectors, India and Germany formalised two major agreements on 12th January 2026 in Ahmedabad. These instruments were exchanged during the official visit of Friedrich Merz, Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, to India.
The documents consist of a Joint Declaration of Intent between the Department of Posts and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, alongside a Letter of Intent between the Department of Posts and Deutsche Post AG. The Joint Declaration was signed by Vandita Kaul, Secretary (Posts), and Philipp Ackermann, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to India. The Letter of Intent was signed by Jitendra Gupta, Director General Postal Services, and Tobias Meyer, CEO of DHL Group.
This partnership establishes a framework for cooperation in cross-border e-commerce and time-definite international deliveries. It facilitates the development of joint products, enhanced network connectivity, and improved bilateral rate arrangements for parcels and letters. Furthermore, both nations will share expertise in digitisation, operational efficiency, and sustainable green logistics.
The agreement is set to transform the logistics landscape by integrating the extensive last-mile reach of India Post with the global network of the DHL Group. The primary impacts include:
- The launch of joint premium express products will provide faster transit times and superior end-to-end tracking for international shipments.
- By offering affordable and reliable logistics solutions, the deal enables Indian artisans, startups, and small enterprises to access global markets with greater ease.
- A focus on green logistics ensures that the expansion of trade is supported by environmentally conscious transport and delivery practices.
- Enhanced connectivity is expected to increase export volumes and integrate Indian businesses more effectively into global value chains.
This collaboration underscores a mutual commitment to innovation and sustainable growth in international trade through a modernised logistics ecosystem.
