Industries Minister announces panel to explore Bhiwandi’s potential as Asia’s biggest logistics hub in Assembly session.

Bhiwandi may soon become Asia’s largest logistics hub, as announced by Maharashtra Industries Minister Uday Samant during a recent Legislative Assembly session. Responding to a proposal by Bhiwandi East MLA Rais Shaikh, Samant revealed that the state will establish a dedicated committee to examine the possibility and draft an appropriate policy.
Bhiwandi already hosts major warehousing operations catering to leading e-commerce players. Samant acknowledged the region’s strategic importance and existing administrative challenges, such as the absence of an IAS officer and limited local authority powers. The proposed committee will comprise four to five members, including representatives from the industries and urban development departments, with Shaikh also included.
Shaikh emphasised the area’s vast 144 sq km coverage, 30% the size of Mumbai, and raised concerns over encroachment on government land valued at ₹3,000 crore. He urged for administrative reforms and land protection to ensure the region contributes significantly to the state’s $1 trillion economic vision. He also demanded an inquiry into unauthorised constructions following a fatal building collapse.
