LG VK Saxena greenlights Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Free Trade Zone (FTZ) establishment at Indira Gandhi International Airport, promising economic uplift and job creation.
LG VK Saxena has authorised the setup of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Free Trade Zone (FTZ) at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in the capital. Focused on cargo infrastructure and related services, these zones are expected to invigorate the logistics sector, spurring economic development and generating employment opportunities, according to the LG office.
The decision, backed by the strategic significance of developing an SEZ at the airport hub, awaits the Delhi Development Authority’s (DDA) approval in line with the provisions of the Master Plan of Delhi 2021. Spanning approximately five acres, the SEZ is poised to stimulate economic activities encompassing exports, warehousing, trading, and associated services within the airport complex.
An official emphasised that the SEZ would streamline procedures such as applications, licensing, and clearances, minimising bureaucratic hurdles and offering tax benefits to entrepreneurs. Recognised as a pilot air cargo hub by the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, Delhi necessitates tier 1, 2, and 3 infrastructure levels.
While Delhi International Airport has established tier 1 and 2 infrastructure through cargo terminals and logistics centers, the proposed SEZ would fulfill tier 3 requirements at the airport complex.
Delhi Government’s industries department sought DDA’s clearance for the SEZ development, in compliance with the Master Plan, which DDA granted after assessing traffic impact and transportation norms delineated in MPD-2021. However, the approval remains contingent upon adherence to regulations stipulated by the Airport Authority of India, as per an official statement.
