Delhi has launched a transformative city logistics policy aiming to revolutionise freight transportation, address congestion, and fortify economic growth. The industries department’s recommendations cover regulatory frameworks, land-use planning, improved infrastructure, operational enhancements, and extensive technology integration.
Focusing on sectors like fruits and vegetables, textiles, and construction materials, the policy targets the city’s significant trade and distribution role. The draft, accessible for public input, acknowledges Delhi’s challenges with high population density and rapid urbanisation.
Delivered after an exhaustive study by Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS), it identifies key issues affecting businesses, proposing micro and macro changes. Recommendations span policy enhancements, regulatory frameworks, infrastructure improvements, and capacity building.
Key suggestions include vehicular circulation improvement, encroachment elimination, integrated freight data platforms, logistics service aggregator promotion, and logistics infrastructure relocation. The policy envisions establishing freight villages along key highways, micro-delivery hubs, and relocating logistics facilities. Notably, it emphasises fire safety infrastructure for congested markets and provision of amenities for drivers and support staff.
Delhi’s substantial trade sector, witnessing a remarkable annual growth of 22 percent, underscores the necessity for an efficient and sustainable logistics system. The policy’s public availability seeks input from traders, transporters, and logistic agencies, aiming for a collaborative and inclusive approach to shaping the city’s logistics future.
