The Indian government’s initiative to establish green hydrogen hubs at key ports has garnered enthusiastic responses, particularly from V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu and Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat. During a mid-term review by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Minister Sarbananda Sonowal revealed that the Kandla port is progressing as a hub for green hydrogen, attracting interest from 13 global developers.
Prospective developers have proposed over 7 MMTPA of green ammonia production capacity. Meanwhile, VO Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu has earmarked 500 acres for a green hydrogen hub, signing an MoU with NTPC Green Energy for the installation of a Green Hydrogen/Derivative Production Facility.
The ministry has also submitted proposals for grants to develop common infrastructure supporting green hydrogen projects to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The move aligns with India’s commitment to sustainable practices and green energy production.
