Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, handed over the Centre-issued gazette notification on Saturday to permit Vadodara airport to receive customs and immigration services. The demand for international connectivity has been rising since the new terminal building at the Vadodara airport opened.
The airport is expected to start international flights to Dubai and Sharjah soon. While flights to these destinations can use the existing runway, the fleet headed to the US will need a runway extension. The Union Home Ministry wrote a letter to the Gujarat government and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), followed by an inspection conducted at the Vadodara airport to evaluate the available facilities.
The airport already has the required infrastructure, including conveyor belts and the space to set up immigration and customs facilities. It will speed up the setting up of international services at the airport.
