South Western Railway (SWR) has joined hands with JSW Minerals Rail Logistics under the General Purpose Wagon Investment Scheme (GPWIS) to operate seven specialised hopper wagons for iron ore transportation.
The GPWIS encourages freight customers to invest in wagon leasing, offering freight rebates that promote bulk cargo transportation by rail. This initiative, the first of its kind in SWR, aims to enhance the supply chain for core sector industries and reduce logistics costs by facilitating a modal shift from road to rail.
The specialised wagons, produced by Titagarh Rail System in Kolkata, are expected to be operational from April 2024. JSW Minerals Rail Logistics is investing Rs 29.5 crore per rake, with a 10 percent freight rebate for customers on every booking.
The agreement was signed by SWR’s Chief Commercial Manager/Freight Marketing, A Sundar, and JSW’s Executive Vice President (Planning and Logistics), Sushil Nowal.
