Kashmir’s handloom and handicraft exports more than double, exceeding ₹1,100 crore in 2023-24.
Kashmir’s handloom and handicraft exports have seen an impressive rise, more than doubling over the past two years to surpass ₹1,100 crore. Exports surged from ₹563 crore in 2021-22 to a remarkable ₹1,162 crore in 2023-24, reflecting a robust growth trajectory.
This sharp increase highlights the growing global demand for Kashmiri craftsmanship, known for its intricate designs and high-quality materials. Shawl exports alone jumped from ₹165.98 crore in 2021-22 to ₹424.20 crore in the last fiscal year, while carpet exports rose from ₹251.05 crore to ₹357.21 crore.
The rise in exports is attributed to enhanced global awareness of Kashmiri crafts, improved marketing strategies, and strengthened export channels. Government initiatives, including the issuance of Geographic Indication (GI) tags to preserve the authenticity of these crafts, have also played a crucial role. Khalid Ahmad Bhat, a Pashmina artisan, emphasised the impact of government policies and incentives on promoting exports and expanding the sector.
Officials noted that various initiatives, such as exhibitions and promotional campaigns, have significantly boosted demand for Kashmiri handicrafts worldwide, especially in the Gulf and Europe. The GI tag has been a game changer, leading to increased demand and enhanced exports.
