Dominion Energy and Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority have initiated the construction of a 200,000-panel solar farm at Dulles International Airport, marking the largest renewable energy project at a U.S. airport.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the 835-acre project took place, signaling Dominion’s commitment to achieving 16,000 megawatts of solar capacity by 2035 as part of its efforts to fulfill a state law mandating zero-emission non-nuclear energy production by 2045. The solar farm will contribute 100 megawatts of solar generation and 50 megawatts of battery storage, powering approximately 37,000 homes. Despite Dominion’s efforts, some rural counties in Virginia have expressed opposition to the solar expansion due to concerns about farmland loss and increased electricity costs. The Dulles project is anticipated to be completed by 2026.
