Chennai establishes a 22-member logistics coordination committee to advance green logistics initiatives.
In a significant move towards decarbonizing the logistics sector, the state government has established the Chennai City Logistics Coordination Committee. Headed by I Jayakumar, special officer of the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), the committee aims to promote sustainable logistics practices across Chennai and Coimbatore.
The committee comprises key stakeholders such as the Chennai corporation commissioner, managing director of Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, and managing director of Chennai Metro Rail. Its primary objective is to develop comprehensive logistics plans for both cities, focusing on mapping current freight performance, defining present and future needs, identifying areas for immediate improvement, and outlining long-term strategies.
Furthermore, the plan will integrate futuristic technologies like ‘flying taxis’ for efficient cargo transport within the city, though implementation of drone infrastructure is anticipated to take time.
Stakeholder engagement is a pivotal aspect, with the committee planning consultations involving academic institutions, civil society organisations, and trade associations to formulate actionable plans tailored to each city’s requirements.
Meetings of the Chennai City Logistics Coordination Committee will be held quarterly, with additional sessions scheduled as needed by the chairperson. The government’s newly released logistics policy underscores a commitment to foster economic growth through an integrated logistics framework over the next decade. Key initiatives include promoting eco-friendly modes of transport such as rail and coastal shipping to mitigate environmental impact.
