India’s major ports report a 4.95% drop in November cargo traffic, with JNPA and Deendayal showing growth amid sector-wide decline.
Cargo traffic at India’s 12 major ports witnessed a 4.95% decline in November, falling to 67.53 million tonnes from 71.05 million tonnes in the same period last year, according to data released by the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
The decline was noted across several major ports, including Chennai, Visakhapatnam, and Mumbai. However, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Deendayal Port (formerly Kandla) stood out, recording year-over-year growth of 12.34% and 10.10%, respectively.
Among the ports facing significant declines, New Mangalore Port reported a 19% drop, and Mormugao Port experienced a steep 29.64% decrease in cargo volume compared to November 2023.
India’s 12 central government-controlled major ports include Deendayal, Mumbai, JNPA, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (formerly Ennore), VO Chidambarnar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip, and Kolkata (including Haldia).
This decline highlights challenges in the sector, with most ports witnessing reduced activity. The performance of JNPA, India’s top container port, and Deendayal Port offers some optimism amid an otherwise concerning trend for November.
