Amazon India broadens its partnership with Indian Railways, enhancing delivery speeds with 1-day and 2-day service across India, improving logistics efficiency.
Amazon India is scaling up its logistics capabilities through an expanded partnership with Indian Railways. This collaboration aims to enhance delivery speeds across the country, ensuring 1-day and 2-day delivery options for a vast range of products. Under a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Amazon and Indian Railways will work together to optimise the rail network for more efficient package movement.
The partnership will focus on developing hub-and-spoke networks, prioritising key railway zones, and establishing mega-parcel hubs. The initial phase will implement a hub-and-spoke model for specific origin-destination pairs, with plans to scale this model across the network. The joint effort will address first- and last-mile requirements, optimise transit times, and explore cost-effective options to boost parcel volumes on railways.
Ravinder Goyal, Member (Operations and Business Development) of the Railway Board, praised the MoU, highlighting its role in enhancing e-commerce logistics and aligning with the government’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat and Viksit Rail’. He encouraged the e-commerce sector to leverage rail transport’s efficiency and sustainability.
Amazon India’s partnership with Indian Railways, initiated in 2019, has significantly increased the movement of parcels by rail. The collaboration began with express transportation solutions on the Mumbai-Delhi route and has grown to include Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs), which decongest the rail network and accelerate freight movement. Since 2019, Amazon’s use of rail has expanded from one train to over 120 trains, operating 130 intercity routes across 91 cities.
The enhanced partnership will support Amazon India’s commitment to fast delivery, offering 1-day and 2-day service to customers in remote areas. This aligns with the company’s broader strategy to provide extensive selection and reliable delivery options, with Prime members enjoying free same-day and next-day delivery on millions of items.
Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations at Amazon India, emphasised the continued innovation in their logistics model, combining Amazon’s e-commerce expertise with Indian Railways’ extensive network to ensure timely delivery of products nationwide.
