Shri Sarbananda Sonowal has started a four-day South Korea visit to expand shipbuilding cooperation and pitch India’s maritime industry.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal has begun a four-day visit to South Korea, pitching India’s maritime opportunity to Korean industry as the two countries work to expand shipbuilding cooperation and move India toward its goal of becoming one of the world’s top five shipbuilding nations by 2047.
Shri Sonowal opened the trip in Busan, which he called the hub of Korea’s maritime industry, with an interaction with Indian professionals working in Korean shipbuilding. India’s Ambassador to South Korea, Gourangalal Das, welcomed the gathering, which includes people from Samsung Heavy Industries, Hanwha Ocean, HD Hyundai, DNV and the Indian Register of Shipping.
He urged them to see VOYAGES, the framework adopted in April during South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s state visit to India, as a platform for their professional growth and India’s maritime future. VOYAGES covers cooperation in shipbuilding, shipping and maritime logistics. He said India will need many more shipbuilders, marine engineers, naval architects, designers, welders, project managers and technology specialists.
Shri Sonowal will also take part in a ministerial roundtable in Busan for World Maritime Day, with the secretary-general of the International Maritime Organisation expected to attend.
