Union Minister, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal visited TERI’s Gwal Pahari campus to review green shipping corridors and port readiness for alternative fuels as part of India’s maritime decarbonisation push.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal visited The Energy and Resources Institute’s Gwal Pahari campus in Gurugram to review a series of green shipping initiatives and advance the ministry’s maritime decarbonisation agenda. During the visit, the National Centre of Excellence for Green Ports and Shipping presented its mandate, ongoing projects and upcoming plans to support the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in advancing maritime decarbonisation. The Rocky Mountain Institute presented its work on developing low- and zero-emission shipping corridors, outlining efforts to accelerate adoption of cleaner fuels and technologies across the shipping ecosystem. Three major ports, Deendayal Port Authority, Paradip Port Authority and V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, presented progress on Green Fuel Bunkering Hubs, detailing steps to strengthen infrastructure for alternative and green marine fuels. Kamarajar Port Limited separately reported that its coal terminals are now equipped with shore power facilities, allowing berthed vessels to draw electricity from land instead of running onboard engines.
Sonowal said green shipping was no longer a choice but the direction the world was moving in, and that India intended to lead from the front, with ports needing to become ready for the fuels of tomorrow. He added that every initiative reviewed, from shore power at coal terminals to bunkering hubs for green fuels, took India closer to a maritime sector that was cleaner, more competitive and future-ready. The visit comes as the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways steps up efforts to build green shipping corridors and bunkering capacity at Indian ports, as part of a broader push to align the country’s maritime sector with global decarbonisation timelines.
