IATA launches a program to validate tracking devices, enhancing safety and efficiency in air cargo shipments.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has introduced the Air Cargo Device Assessment Program, designed to validate air cargo tracking devices, data loggers, and sensor-equipped tools against stringent industry safety standards.
“The fastest-growing air cargo segments—pharmaceuticals, perishables, electronics, and high-value goods—depend on battery-powered devices to ensure shipment integrity. The IATA Air Cargo Device Assessment ensures these devices comply with strict safety requirements,” said Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo.
This program validates devices under IATA’s Recommended Practice 1693, which sets critical safety standards for electromagnetic compatibility and battery safety. Approved devices will be listed on ONE Source, IATA’s centralised platform for stakeholders seeking compliant tracking tools.
First Validation: THE BOX by LivingPackets
THE BOX, a reusable, smart, secure, and sustainable packing solution, is the first product validated under this program. “IATA validation confirms compliance with global standards, giving THE BOX universal acceptance across the air cargo industry,” said Denis Mourrain, COO of LivingPackets.
Benefits across the Industry
The program simplifies the approval process for device manufacturers, reduces repetitive documentation, and increases global market visibility. Airlines gain safer operations, streamlined approvals, and access to a repository of compliant devices. Shippers and forwarders benefit from centralised device information, facilitating better routing and carrier choices.
Ultimately, the initiative enhances the handling of time- and temperature-sensitive shipments, reducing waste and ensuring shipment integrity across the supply chain.
