IATA and FIATA endorse ICHM to standardise air cargo processes, boosting efficiency and safety in the global supply chain.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the FIATA International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations have announced a significant collaboration with FIATA’s endorsement of the IATA Cargo Handling Manual (ICHM). This milestone follows a comprehensive year-long process of discussions and reviews between the two organisations.
The ICHM establishes standardised procedures for airlines, ground handling agents (GHAs), and freight forwarders, promoting consistency and efficiency throughout the cargo handling process. By adopting these standards, the involved parties can better align their operations, leveraging their unique expertise to enhance supply chain efficiency.
“FIATA’s endorsement of the ICHM supports IATA’s goal of creating a safer, more efficient air cargo industry,” said Brendan Sullivan, IATA Global Head of Cargo. “Standardising procedures reduces risks, enhances operational performance, and improves efficiency, benefiting the global supply chain and the millions who rely on it.”
Stéphane Graber, FIATA Director General, emphasised the collaborative effort in reviewing the ICHM to ensure it meets the needs of freight forwarders, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He noted that the standardised procedures will facilitate faster, more efficient processes while enhancing service to shippers. Moreover, the focus on safety and security is integral to this collaboration, ensuring these vital aspects are embedded in the handling procedures, ultimately driving operational efficiency and cost savings across the supply chain.
FIATA’s endorsement marks a new chapter in air cargo handling, uniting all major stakeholders around a consistent set of global standards and fostering a collaborative spirit between freight forwarders and airlines, all aimed at achieving operational excellence.
